TeleNode
Intuitive learning video platform using YouTube as infra to keep costs low
Client
Ministry of Education (MOE)
Role
Full-stack Development & Architecture
Stack
React, Node.js, YouTube API, PostgreSQL
Project Overview
TeleNode is a video-based learning platform built for the Ministry of Education that leverages YouTube’s infrastructure to deliver educational content at scale without the typical hosting costs.
The platform needed to handle thousands of students accessing video content simultaneously while keeping operational costs minimal and maintaining a smooth user experience.
Problem
MOE needed a scalable video learning solution that could:
- Handle high concurrent user loads during peak hours
- Keep hosting and infrastructure costs low
- Provide an intuitive interface for both teachers and students
- Track progress and engagement metrics
- Work reliably on school networks with varying bandwidth
Traditional video hosting solutions would have been prohibitively expensive at the required scale.
Solution
We built TeleNode using YouTube as the video infrastructure while creating a custom learning layer on top:
Smart Architecture
- Used YouTube’s CDN for video delivery to eliminate hosting costs
- Built a React frontend with clean navigation and progress tracking
- Implemented server-side caching to reduce API calls
- Added offline viewing support for downloaded content
User Experience
- Clean, distraction-free player interface
- Organized playlists by subject and module
- Progress tracking across sessions
- Mobile-responsive design for tablets and phones
Teacher Tools
- Simple content management for uploading and organizing videos
- Analytics dashboard for viewing engagement
- Class management and assignment features
Outcome
TeleNode won the OCBC Innovation Award for its cost-effective approach to educational technology.
Key Results
- 50% faster content delivery compared to the previous system
- 90% cost reduction in video hosting infrastructure
- Strong adoption across multiple schools in the pilot program
- Zero downtime during the first year of operation
Teachers reported that students engaged more with the platform due to its familiar YouTube-style interface, while administrators appreciated the significant cost savings without sacrificing quality.
Technical Highlights
The project showcased several smart technical decisions:
- YouTube API integration with intelligent rate limiting and caching
- Progressive Web App features for offline access
- Optimized database queries for fast progress tracking
- Responsive design that works on school-issued tablets
The platform continues to serve students across Singapore, proving that thoughtful architecture can deliver premium experiences without premium infrastructure costs.
